Italian Grape Ale: when beer meets wine

Italian Grape Ale: when beer meets wine

Italian Grape Ales (IGA) are one of the most fascinating innovations in the Italian craft beer scene. Born from the encounter between the brewing and winemaking worlds, this style combines the creativity of master brewers with the richness of Italy’s vineyards, resulting in a product that is distinctive, authentic, and increasingly appreciated on international markets.

What is an Italian Grape Ale

IGAs are beers brewed with a variable percentage of grape must or pomace, which can reach up to 40% of the total. The addition of grapes significantly changes the beer’s aroma and flavour profile, introducing fruity, acidic, and vinous notes. Officially recognised by international beer guidelines, Italian Grape Ale is a style that originated in Italy and embodies the country’s biodiversity and pioneering approach to brewing.

An Italian identity

Every Italian Grape Ale tells a story of place. The use of native grape varieties—from Nebbiolo and Sangiovese to Malvasia and Moscato—creates beers with a strong regional identity, where the agricultural component becomes part of the narrative. This close link with the winemaking supply chain not only enhances local production but also represents a powerful marketing tool for brewers aiming to stand out in the craft market.

Techniques and variations

Grape must can be added at different stages of production: during boiling, to enhance colour and body, or during fermentation, to preserve delicate aromas. White grapes typically give lighter, floral results, while red grapes bring complexity, structure, and gentle tannins. The result is a highly versatile range of beers, spanning from crisp and refreshing to full-bodied and suitable for ageing.

Tasting and food pairing

IGAs are known for their balanced and refined sensory profile: malt sweetness harmonises with grape acidity, creating a layered and persistent flavour. They pair beautifully with aged cheeses, seafood, white meats, and gourmet appetizers, making them an ideal addition to the beverage lists of restaurants, pubs, and wine bars. Serve in a tulip glass at 8–12°C to enhance their aromatic complexity.

Opportunities for the Horeca sector

Within the out-of-home and hospitality sectors, Italian Grape Ales offer a high value-added proposition: they tell a story, attract curiosity, and enrich the drink menu with a unique talking point. More and more venues are introducing IGAs alongside wines and craft beers, appealing to consumers who seek both quality and originality.

Beer&Food Attraction has always been the go-to event for discovering and promoting excellence in the beer and beverage industry. The Italian Grape Ale perfectly embodies this spirit of innovation—bringing together brewers, distributors, and Horeca professionals to explore new frontiers of taste and creativity made in Italy.
